i agree w/jenni.
as luc is totally trustworthy around the other animals, he's not crated, and i do invite him up to sleep in the bed, cause it is nice. but we are very strict that he only comes up if invited, if he gets off to go get a drink of water during the night he will sleep next to the bed but not come up b/c i haven't said he could.
i haven't had any jealousy issues with teagan. i have though, to even out the attention differences, especially since she's crated, made 'special time' with teagan and we have our own special things - she gets sung too, we have a couple of games that are her and i's games, so that she has something exclusively one-on-one w/me and so does luc. teagan will have to be crated less in the new house due to more space, but she still will be crated at night (the cats like to sleep in the bed too), so i'll continue to work w/the idea that each dog gets special time/activity that's all their own.
Teagan!

I have rotated them before wth sleeping with me, and have found a handfull that won't terrorize the cats at night.
Capone is the best(though he ate all the fish food once-all over my bed), and really isn't dominant at all. So i think this'll work.
Except for his smell.
None of my other dogs smell like dogs. Partly because i feed raw, partly because 2 are schnauzer mixes, who don't have that doggy smell-but even just after a bath-capone smells like a dog. Not stinky, and not like he has bad ears or teeth, not that kind of smell-but like a dog.
Will this go away with good feeding? Or is he just destined to have that lab smell? He and he alone makes my new house already smell like dogs-and my clothes, bed , etc......
he already gets bathed frequently-being solid white-he gets more baths than the others-who i almost never bathe(and they still don't smell).
not a biggy-i personally love the doggy smell-but not when i am sitting in class-and get a wiff of capone-and other people commenting on how my coat smells like dogs. It didn't used to.

Does Capone have a dark reddish/brown tinge to his nails (which I assume are clear) or in between his toes? If so, this is yeast, and you can clear it up w/an anti-fungal supplement followed by a probiotic. My APBTs are a bit more prone to it than my others, even though one has never even eaten dog food. Otherwise, I don't know what the smell is you're talking about.

nope.
you know how your typical kibble fed yellow lab or hound dog smells?
not wet dog, not dog poop-just a doggy smell.
He smells like that.
His skin is clearing up-and he is already being bathed with both a anti fungal shampoo, and a anti microbial shampoo.
His teeth are fine, so are his ears. He doesn't stink-he just smells like a hound dog. It's weird for me-maya used to smell like that(part pointer)-and other beagles, labs, retrievers i have been around smelled like that-maybe bull dogs do too-and i have never noticed.

Then I dunno. I just thought maybe it was yeast. Another thing it might be is an over-production of oil due to all the baths. Is he getting at all greasy? Maybe once he doesn't need all the treatments it'll go away.

i haven't noticed greasy-i will double check when i get home(i am at my old house-my new one doesn't have internet yet)
i'm just not sure what it could be. Like i said-it's not a smells bad thing, just a noticible dog smell.
the only thing i can think of is-he still doesn't have any hair on his neck-and it (the hanging skin on the underside) is all red and irritated from wearing a collar. The last people who had him had a really rough collar AND a chain around his neck-really tight, with a heavy chain paddlocked to the collar.
I still can't get the hair to grow back-and any collar-no matter what it is made of, will irritate it. And well, he obviously needs to wear a collar to go for walks, etc. I take it off in the house.
but other that that-i can't think of a single thing that would make him smell so doggy.

can I interject with a question of my own along the lines of possible yeast infection? so red-ish stains on the hair between the feet is from yeast? If a dog had this coupled with chronic hot spots and maybe scabs would that be yeast or something else?
Oh,Mallory, I knew someone who had a dog who had the WORST doggy smell, like never-been-bathed smell, and they tried everything and never could find a fix. NOw theirs may have been diet related but the dog did spend alot of time outdoors and I just assumed that it may have been from the body producing oils and things to protect it from the elements. I know shedding can work like that a little. If he was kept outside, could it be a lingering thing from that time? Just an Idea, Im no veterinarian though!

Yes, Candida can do this. It's also a common cause of ear problems. Grainy diets are a big cause. If your dog has red between toes or his nails are tinged dark red/brown, I would quit all grain immediately, get him/her on some kind of support for candida (I have used Garden of Life Fungal Defense) and then when it subsides, use probiotics for maintenance.
Sorry for the hijack, Mallory.
