One day, I will be looking for a dog training school to proof Bindi and Cody's training. (this will probably be after next year or so.) I was looking on the web and found this site on my computer- K9 companions. Has anyone had experience with these trainers? The only other one I know of, and I have had much time to search yet, is the petsmart and petco training, and I am not sure I want to go with that. I believe Ed with his experience when he says don't go there. So, anyway, has anyone heard of K-9 companions and their trainers? Thanks
In my opinion places like Petco and Petsmart are not good places to go to get basic obedience training.
My advice would be to pick Ed's videos and do the training yourself. And get hands on help with things you have trouble with. The best programs I have seen are the ones that include training the owner with the dog. Also read Ed's e-books and stick with this forum.
Dealing with behavior problems and training most of my life this is probably one of the best resources available when it comes to these issues.
Choosing a trainer is really up to your expectation and what you expect and plan to do with the dog. Do your research, go and investigate the trainers and facility you are interested in. If something looks or sounds good to be true it probably is.
After a year or so of training you are providing you should be able to do your own proofing any how. You actually should be proofing now as you progress by teaching the command, proofing the command by adding distractions and having your dog holding the command while under distraction, then maintaining the commands. Adding and building as your dog is capable of learning more and wanting to learn more.
You also have to look at these places and how they advertise and the use of phrases like trainer to the stars or brag they have something special to offer but, beat around the bush and don't completey explain what that special something is. Find a trainer you are comfortable with as far as methods and techniques. You will want to look for a balanced trainer that utilizes methods and techniques that is suited to your dogs temperament.
Another good option is to find a training club or breed club to join. They often have experienced trainers and handlers along with other owners with experience.
