Heather,You sound like you already know this but I think one common point from John and Eric is being able to trust the people you are getting the dog from and where you will train. That would be the same dog or puppy.
Heather, thanks for the compliments about the Joliet Schutzhund web site!! I really enjoy helping keep the group organized, providing craptactular pictures (but I'm working on that!), and helping bring good Schutzhund training - especially to beginners in the sport.
You are welcome to come visit our group. I can also explain why we are NOT structured as an official club under any governing orgnaization (nothing against clubs, it's just not for us), and why we're structured as what we call a training group. Take advantage of the opportunity to ask your question about puppy v. dog to a guy with 30 years experience! Face to face! (just don't come this weekend since our regular field - the one with adjacent hot coffee and regular plumbing is under water!)
PM me if you would like Dave's short list of recommended breeders (which includes Leerburg). Not that he thinks all but about 4 breeders suck. He just has about 4 where he knows what they produce well enough, that he would buy a dog from them.
I went through the same thought process, puppy or older dog. I've bought older dogs, 14 mos to 3 years, with different levels of training. I prefer the older dogs if you know good people to get them from. Know temperment, drive, nerves, OFA, getting along with people and other dogs, etc.
