I have been seeing a lot about adding digestive enzymes to your dog's food to assist in absorbing the nutrients. Is it really worth the money or is it all hype?
One has Amylase, Protease I, II, III, Peptizme SP, Lipase, Cellatate, Lactose, Maltase, Sucrase and Bromelain. The other has only those ingredients in bold.
Not at all hype! Prozyme is good stuff, and I use Garden of Life brand Primal Defense Ultra as well (probiotic). Processed food, vaccinations, and antibiotics wreak havoc on a healthy gut. Probiotics and enzymes can make a HUGE difference in an animal's overall health, as the digestive system plays an integral part in the immune system and many others. If your dog eats commercial food, they're not getting many of the "nutrients," as they are not in a form a dog's body can make use of.
I use them especially when transitioning a kibble-fed dog onto raw. Eating raw meat causes a dog's body to produce them on their own after several weeks, but I like to add it in the beginning at least, and it seems to help eliminate transitional problems. In a kibble-fed dog, regardless of what they say is sprayed on after production, I would use the enzymes, if nothing else. They have a hard enough time trying to get nutrients out of processed food. The more nutrition that they're able to utilize, the better, IMO. Remember, amylase is needed to break down grains, and dogs don't produce amylase.
Thanks Jen. Are all the ingredients listed beneficial? One product has more ingredients than the other. More doesn't necessarily mean better. Prozyme vs. Universal Enzyme?
I have used Prozyme; I have not used Universal Enzyme. I like Prozyme, but I like the probiotics I'm giving now even better, and have noticed a real difference. Try both and see if you notice anything. Probiotics can be bought at any health food store, or online, where I get mine...WAAAY cheaper . The stuff I give Mia is $88/bottle and I got it for $47-ish, I think. And it was like a miracle cure.
