Didier, these dogs are NOT for even the "moderately experienced" handler. They are wonderful, powerful canines, but are absolutely NOT a pet-type dog.
From what I recall about your requirements for a dog, the Ovy would not be a good choice. My honest recommendation: admire them from afar, and keep searching.
Certainly a great dog, though, in it's very specialized role.
what do you mean by relatively moderate experienced hyandler that it aint recommended?what made it not so?is it because of its social aggression?will it be good for an experienced handler if he is looking for a pp dog?or maybe it aint got much compared to other working breeds like the mal and gsd?i remember they use to say things about the rotts but now you can hardly see anything to work with them and in this side of the bowl its got zip aggression already ,sad to say,
I live in Ukraine, so I get to see Ovtcharki on a regular basis and I know people who breed them.
First off, "Ovtcharka" is simply Russian for "(female) shepherd". That's what these dogs are usually used for in the former Soviet Union: guarding flocks, fighting other dogs, or property guardians.
They are NOT kept as pets or trained for PP. Occasionally well-meaning people try to do so, and such people can be distinguished by their scars. Think "junkyard dog", not "schutzhund sieger", although I have seen them used by police and military here as attack dogs.
Also, the odds of your getting a decent Ovtcharka are slim and none. The people who really know the breed won't give or sell a good example to outsiders. Even the breeders here admit that their dogs are second-rate compared to the actual caucasian specimens.
