Ok this is my second post, I'm trying to learn as quick as I can. I like they guy a few post below me got a pup that was a few days over 6 weeks, I did some homework before I went to get my dog, but but not enough. I wish I knew then what I know now. Saying that though I wouldn't trade my dog for anything, he has a great personality, but it is almost unbearable to let him out of the crate sometimes. He's the nippiest, most chewing thing I've ever seen. When he's out of his crate he must be chewing at all times! Redirecting doesn't work too well. He has really good prey drive, and he's very food driven. He gets a walk in the morning and evening about 15-20 minutes. Then I try to give him 45 min - 1 hour of supervised time outside. They only problem is all he wants to do is pick up sticks and crap like that and chew and eat them, and it's starting to frustrate me. I'd like to play with him and try to get him to start learning fetch, but when we get out there he's like, "Oh, My God!!! Sticks!!! I must chew and eat them all! And this is the only thing he wants to do except for a couple of short interactions with a ball here and there. I can't pick them all up we live in the middle of the woods.
We're bonded good he comes when he's told, and he can sit, and lay down. I didn't want to put a muzzle on him (outdoors), I'd like him to learn to play with a ball or another toy. Also, from what I've read you need to wait until at least 6 months to get an E collar. So I know that's out for now. Sorry this is a little long. Thanks for your help.
hes probably teething and the sensation/pain has to be satisfied, id say just let him be, give him LOTS of stuff to chew on and wait it out. It doesnt sound like a behaviour issue and chewing is what puppies do. some worse than others, i had a dog who chewed only and everything that was dearest to me, and not because he wasnt supervised.
but I understand that its frusterating to have a puppy whos life doesnt revolve around doing things with you but about what it will chew next, dont worry, its just a stage
But he is teething and will be for the next 5 months at least. lol
If carol will chime in she is very good at ideas.
I will put a wet towel in the freezer and let it freeze.
Do you have a kong that will work wonders put peanut butter in the middle and freeze it.
Also teach him the drop it command it will work wonders.
Do you have any squeakers toys That will get his attention But be careful they will tear up the toys and pull squeakers out.
Yeah, I have some squeaker toys and a Kong as well. From everything I've read on here it's just a phase, a terrible one at that! He likes to be by me where ever we go he just wants to have something in his mouth. When it's something completely inappropriate I've been trading him a treat for whatever he's chomping on. What's the best way to teach him the drop command? I have Ed's video on Puppy 8 weeks to 8 months, but it really didn't go into detail on that.
Thanks
I have just did a quick yank on the leash and said drop it.
Then right as soon as she drops it I will give her a praise or treat and praise.
It worked really well for me. And yes it is a phase but is he has enough things that he can chew on it should be ok.
Since getting on this forum I have not lost one corner on furniture and not anything messed up in my house.
They have a special kind of kong. But it is not kong brand its another brand it is shaped like a stick but bigger jewel has carried that thing around sense I bought it. It is blue and has 3 strings running through it. I will find the brand and post it.
It is the same hardness as a kong.
The brand name is a ORKA
They have many different types I like this one cause they can chew on it. But you can play fetch with it to.
One of the best ways to teach drop it is to play a game called two ball. It doesn't have to be balls. You could use two of anything the dog is motivated for.
If they like to play fetch you throw one item, have them bring it back. Make the other item look better than the one they have by shaking and/or wiggling it around acting excited. Tell them to drop it or leave it. When they drop the item in their mouth throw or give them the item you have and repeat.
If they are not hip on fetch try to get them to trade things like this while in one spot.
Using a long lead outside wil help also a 20 or 30 training lead works well. They still have freedom and gives you control. When they go for something inappropriate tug on the lead and tell them leave it or drop it. Redirect to an appropriate item and praise really well.
