Mike, I cannot say that I disagree with you. I should have been more prepared to intervene, but I stupidly assumed the parents would not allow their small child to run up to my dog. The second time I was coming around a blind corner and did not see them in time. I also know that dogs, even balanced, well-trained dogs, are unpredictable. And I know, that in the eyes of the law any incident would have been my responsibility and me and my dog would have suffered for it.
I still think, however, that parents need to learn to control their children and think of their safety. Yes, we need to intercede and ensure that incidents don't happen and yes, in this instance I failed at that intercession. However, I don't think we should have a need to do this. If our dogs are under control at our side and we are behaving and using the trail responsibly, we should not have to protect other people's children. I still think that the parents deserve criticism.
both sides have valid points, and both parents with kids, and owners with dogs need to control their kids/dogs.
having been beaten up on this site, though in the wrong, i know how it can feel. It's like, "I get it, i know! please stop now".
If an owner makes a mistake, and realizes it, then that's great.
i know everytime i take bart around other dogs, i am taking a risk. I also rejoice when he behaves, and want to tell everyone.

I think you have every right to be proud of your accomplishments with your dog. Obviously the dog was well mannered and forgiving. Good for you! Good for your dog!
It is a pain in the butt to have to compensate for the sheer lunacy of oblivious people, and we all resent the situations such people often can put us in but for our dogs, we have to be the ones in control. ... What we should or should not have to do when it comes to people has little to do with our responsibility to our dogs. I seldom expect much from strangers I meet walking my dogs and I am seldom disappointed.
