I didn't see a catagory for this specifically but thought this section was the best fit. What methods, criteria, gut feelings,.... do people use to select a new pup or older dog, for their various interests. That would be family pet, service dogs of all kinds, sporting dogs of all kinds, etc..........
There are dozens of articles and Ed has a good tape on bite work for puppies on this subject so I will not list everything for the interest of time and space. But I will comment on the one that stands out to me. This is how a puppy reacts to being called by a stranger. This is the single best test for the future temperament of a dog. You want him to come running enthusiastically to you. A slight initial hesitation at first is ok for a future PSD as long as he then proceeds as above. I have seen on a few occasions this slight hesitation rearing its head as a little sharpness in years to come. While this is not necessarily important for Sport many PSD trainers look for that in there dogs. Note: My background is not in PSD so I am going by hearsay
