Hey will, thanks. I didn't see that, but I wasn't looking at the site for future prospects. I don't need a PPD, and I can't afford a $50,000 dog, ha?
I just really respect the training, skill, dedication, and time that goes into training PPD, or sport dogs, and I just try and read as much as possible about it. I never cae across the walking backwards at alert before.
Robert - Yes. But there are conditions to this behavior. As I stated if you have discouraged aggressive behavior the dog will not likely react much or will react in a limited way. Even dogs that have not had their aggressive behavior discouraged may not continue the fight with any adversary if they have never been trained and taught to withstand the stress and pressure of a physical attack as real PPDs are.
Betas are the enforcers, they are the natural protectors and their primary "aggressive" behavior is territorial aggression.
I've also read that dogs will not protect unless trained too and not always then.
One on one, I think most untrained dogs would run, but what about a pack?
For example, Zeus my Dobe is a big wimp. He will not defend himself from another dog, but if Gunner is there, he is totally different. They team up. Do you think that would apply directed towards an "intruder/attacker"?
We had a major string of B&E on my street. TVs, computers, jewelry, etc stolen. Everysingle house but mine was broken into on my street. Guess nobody wanted test my dogs (which is good thing for me since they are the most valuable things I own!). I can replace a TV, but not dogs!
Tiffany - hence my statement regarding back up. Dogs are always more hmm.. "courageous" and forward moving in their aggression when there is more than one. This is referred to as packing up.
Dogs know there is strength in numbers. Dogs react to eachothers energy and drives.
