I am fostering a 10 year old kerry for a rescue group. He and his sister where brought into a shelter around christmas. The rescue took tham both. The female found a new home, but the male developed pneumonia and spent time at the vet. He was then taken to a kennel.
At the shelter they were both energetic and clean in the runs. But the male totaly changed after his sickness. He pees in his crate, pees on the floor, pees outside.,just about anywhere, and then starts to lick it up. Poop is treated in the same maner. Outside is more like breakfast time or lunch depending on the time of day. He even likes the taste of vinegar. He passed his blood work test at the vet, too.
If you could work with him on some simple "tricks" training it would probably help, mental excersize is as taxing as physical and terriers are....well...terriers. They need to be challenged in some way so they don't come up with their own amusements.
BTW my grandmother used to raise and show kerrys.....pretty rare even these days aren't they? Bless you for being involved in rescue!
It has taking him sometime to come around to normal dog behavior. He would hardly walk on a leash and would shy away fron your hand.Rescue thought maybe he suffered brain damage from a high temperature during his illness.
I have been training him to sitand it seems to be giving him some stucture. He does drink a lot. I will check for URI. He will clean up the whole yard and potty in the house. He is does not respond well to rewards..very alof.a little fearfull
