Does anyone have any advice on how to correct a dog while she's in her crate - or have any links to previous conversations? Thank you..
Sarah
For doing what? (That will help with the answer.)
growling primarily. She tends to growl while waiting to be released to eat or while eating. I personally find this unacceptable as I feel it could/would lead to more aggressive behavior as time goes on.
This can be a tricky situation but essentially you really need to work on pack structure with this dog. I have no doubt in my mind that the lack of structure and the food aggression issues led to the bite - at this point you are lucky it was just a warning bite.
At this point if she growls in anticipation of being let out, do not let her out. Stand their but do not let her out. Let her growl herself out. The food only increases the issue in the crate and should probably be dealt with as a seperate problem. Feed her in a bathroom or laundry room.
What do you normally do when she starts growling in the crate?
Typically she gets a firm NO and in the past I've actually just removed the food. I don't know if that's the right thing or not, it will be discussed with the trainer. There have only been two times she's growled once was when I attempted to move her from the bed - it was handled and she is no longer allowed on furniture (she never was 'allowed' on it before was just being removed when she placed herself there if that makes sense) and hasnt' happened since. The other place is the crate ONLY when food or a highly coveted treat is in there. I did stop the paticular treat that was causing the problem (bully sticks) permanently but the food... I admit wavering there because I didn't know exactly what to do and NEVER thought (mistakenly) that it would be related to anything outside of the crate/food issue. She never growls when there isn't food, usually will continue sleeping or wag her tail. Thank you for your response and yes I am lucky it wasn't worse than it was. I've been properly shamed and am only trying to do the right thing now.
No problem I was not trying to berate you, but you are lucky it happened as it did. I just read who you have coming over and I don't think you will have much problems... a trainer at your home will be better to help you than us over the net. Keep us posted!
