I am new to posting this forum. I have been "lurking" for awhile. My male GSD is 18 weeks old. He is constantly "biting" on everything in sight! Especially arms, hands, and legs. He will sit on command, down with command and hand pointing down - but first has to bite the hand. He will "shake" but will bite your hand or arm as he is doing it. Have tried "no bite" he will let go, only to come back. Have tried giving him something else to bite on, with "good bite" but will continue to reach for hand to bite. Ball crazy - but will bite hand before, during, and after going for ball. Curling his lip over teeth and holding it lightly will cause him to yelp and stop for a minute or two - then back to biting. Tell me this will end! ... and what else to try in the meantime. (I have Ed's puppy video).
I'll solve your problem. Sell him to me. LOL. Good prey drive with a super hard temperament. If it were me I would buy a pair of work gloves. If not, then read Ed's article on training a hard pup. I usually would make a comment on obedience training such a young dog (positive only) but with his temperament I think your fine within reason.
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> Mauser, I have the same problem with my 5 month old female GSD. She's an absolute tiger. I can't keep her off my hands, no matter what I try to give her instead. I have bruises all over me. I think it's partially a teething thing...and I stress partially.
I have a 10 month old male GSD who was the same way. He still goes for the hands sometimes, but it's nowhere near as bad as it used to be. The older he gets, the better he gets, so hang in there. It should get a little better after the puppy is through teething. Good luck!
It sounds like you may be unintentionally reinforcing the behavior. If the pup bites and you give them a toy to play with, you are teaching the way to get the toy is to bite. I have a BRT pup with the same problem. What I have gone to ding is walking away from her when she bites me. After a few mins I go back and give her the toy before she can bite me. The other thing is I try to ignor it when she bites me as much as possible. It is working, she is learning that if she bites me I won't play with her anymore, if she bites the toy I will. She is now starting to bring me the toy to play with.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
