My dogs have been on the raw diet for 8 days. I've been feeding roughly 3%, even a little more, of their body weight. It is cold here in Central MN, even though the dogs aren't out 24/7.
They still act like they are starving. I've been feeding just in the evenings. Should I break it into 2 meals? I prefer one for convenience, or should I feed in the morning instead?
I've been feeding chicken backs, elk, and veggies. Adding liver and fish every 3rd day, and eggs also, plus the suggested supplements.
They are all doing really well, no upset tummies or diarrhea. Small little firm stools, instead of cow piles.
Is it just the adjustment period, or could I really not be feeding them enough? Or maybe it is just so good they just want more
My old dog(14 next month)used to gag at every meal of dry food. His teeth aren't that good anymore so everything goes down whole and would come up whole, and eat it all over again. Since we started raw he has never gagged up his food. None of them have. That is a treat all by itself.
As you said it may just be that they like the food so much they gobble it up and can't wait to be fed again!
That said when starting a raw diet feel your dog's ribs regularly. If you are really concerned, weigh the dogs weekly in the beginning. You may have to add a little more food or less, depending on your dog.
I have to feed 5% of my dog's body weight for him to be at ideal weight. I know other dogs that just need 2%. Take it a week at a time and feel free to tweak the amounts as needed.
Oh yeah, I forgot. Despite the 5 % my dog still acts like he is starving. He would be thrilled to inhale a bowl of kibble without chewing even, not that I would let him eat that
2 dogs I would say are perfect right now, can feel the ribs nicely, my girl is still fat, she isn't getting 3%, and one is really too thin. His backbone and hip points seems a bit too prominent. He is eating well though, and I want to keep him thin he has severe dysplasia, but I really think a couple 3-5 pounds would look good on him.
I guess I should probably weigh each of them and check for the first few weeks. I usually would stop at the vets office, but maybe I can try to do it at home with some help. Maybe a lot of help
Thanks.
