If anyone here who is interested in agility training ever gets a chance to work with or audit a seminar given by Ann Braue, I highly recommend it and I know Ed will also.
I have been to 2 Puppy Camps (with 2 different pups) and audited several handling camps. I attended a 2 day handling seminar a couple weeks ago with Raine.
Ann is a great teacher, a truly nice person and is so good helping you get the most out of your dog, no matter what the drive level of the dog or the skill level of the handler.
Will you be trialing one day Cindy??? And have you seen any of the Greg Derrett agility DVDs?
I hope to be trialing sometime, but it seems like I have had a hard time getting consistent time to train Raine. My first real love in dog training is biting sports, and now that I have an up and coming ringsport dog (Raine's son Rush) I find that I sometimes have to make a decision on which sport to spend my time on.
I have the Greg Derrett videos, bought them 2 or 3 years ago.
Ann teaches skills using a lot of Susan Garrett's methods and uses Linda Mecklenburg's handling system so that's the way I have been trained so far.
Do you have any agility equipment at Leerburg? I hope to build/buy some when I get my new pup. That way, even though I have access to great training venues (Susan Garrett's place for one) I can practice at home.
Yes, with a new puppy there is much to be done, especially if you're trying a new sport. How exciting!
You trialed in SCH a lot when you had your female dobe, do you miss trialing? Or is training just as fulfilling? I guess it doesn't matter much to the dog, as long as they're with you they don't care.
I do have some equipment for my own use, 5 or 6 jumps, weaves, a tunnel, tire, dog walk, wobble board.
I have a travel plank in the basement, I have been teaching Rush 2 on/2 off before he gets too big!
I don't miss trialing, the training is where it's at for me. My nerves get too rattled on trial day. Trialing IS the best way to see where the holes in your training are though, in my experience. I don't think it matters what venue or sport you are are doing, for that to be true.
and you are right, the dogs just want to do something....they don't care if they ever make it to a trial. That's only important to us humans.
