Did anyone catch "Cell dogs" on Animal Planet? ..or maybe it was Discovery?? Anyways, I saw it and it was a great great show. Very happy stories to men/dogs in trouble.
I've watched quite a few of those shows and thought what a great program. I live near Kingston Ontario well known for have 5 prisons and if they implemented a program like that in just a few of the prisons, the humane society here could save alot of dogs.
They do the same here in the county jail. The dogs are only taught OB and socialization, then they are adopted out to the public. No aggression work is done. The dogs are rescued from the local animal shelter so its a good program all around.
I was just talking to someone about this yesterday...she told me that after they pass certification, the dogs go to a no-kill shelter until they are placed in a home. Certainly a great idea!
Alex: I watched it too and I loved it. I was so blessed by the changed lives, the humans and the dogs. Isn't it amazing what a dog can do to a life? I know people who are really gruff people unless they are with their dog, who melts their hearts. I think it is a great blessing what changes can come by caring for and loving a pet. And what a great idea to provide families with a well trained dog. I bet the return rate for the dogs is much less. I especially was blessed by how caring for the dog in the prisons helped to lower the agression rate among inmates. I think I heard that people who participate in that program who do get out, don't usually return. I am not sure about that but I think I heard that. They learn responsiblity and discipline. Isn't it amazing how what they teach their dogs they themselves learn obedience and discipline? Interesting.
Wish there were more programs like that out there.
Anyway, just my thoughts on this.
God bless
