At last my pup has arrived and I am as happy as can be except for one thing. Crate training went as good as could be expected with the exception of peeing in his crate. We take him out every few hours. In the morning after we leave he goes in his crate (he is alone from 8:30- 11-11:30) and sometimes he will go in the afternoon

What do I do????
Take him out more.
Can you come home during the morning or have someone else walk him at mid-point? I assume he is a baby?
If you take him out every hour or so, you will note his "schedule," and then you will know how often and when he has to go. You don't want him to form an indoor-potty habit; you want him to associate potty with outdoors.
You will miss lots of excellent hints if you don't read up in this forum..... very recent (and even current threads) are talking about your question.
Thats probably a better way to say it. Listen to Connie, I'm certain she has far more experience than I! I know some dogs who will drink or eat until they vomit!

True ... ... but not on a regular basis. I've had dogs who would do that (if I let them) after an hour with a big chewy or a trip to the beach.
But I meant on a daily basis. Dogs pretty much need whatever water their instinct tells them to drink, except, as you say, when they are over-heated, over-salted, etc.
