I am wondering if dobies are allowed to do herding with AKC? If no, is there a club that allows non-herding breeds do herding test? I got a mixed answer on this and was told that they don't let non-herding dogs in their competition. Does anyone know?

I have heard of a few people that do herding with thier Dobes. You might ask around on some of the Dobe specific email list. My Dobe would herd the horses. It wasn't pretty but she got the job done. Worked for someone once and his Dobe worked cows.

Dobes can not participate in AKC herding events. The only non-herding breed that is permitted to do so is the Samoyed.
They can however compete in AHBA and other non-AKC herding events. I've seen Dobes trial in herding and earn a variety of lower level titles. I haven't seen any in the higher levels, but that doesn't mean someone couldn't find one that could do it. There is a really nice Boxer training at the facility I train at right now. Saw it trial a few months ago and was really surprised at how much talent it actually had.
