I just put Kodee's new prong collar on him this morning, and I know I have it fitted correctly, as I re-watched one of my Leerburg DVD's last night. However, I still have a question. I know you are supposed to put the prong on the dog and remove it 2-3 times a day for 2 weeks before training with it.
The reason I'm using the prong right now (he's 6-1/2 mos old), is to stop him from pulling when he wants to get to (i.e. "greet and jump on") other people and animals. I don't plan to use the prong for corrections yet. What I need it for right now is so he will self-correct when he pulls the lead.
My question is: Do I still need to do the 2 weeks of putting on/taking off the prong before I can use it for walks? I'm assuming I do, but wanted to double check. I'm anxious to use it when walking him, but if I need to wait 2 weeks, I have no problem with that.
Thanks for your input!

Edit reason: typo
Kori, I guess it may depend on the dog, but I only conditioned Chula for a week and she had no problems adapting to the prong.
She responds very well to it on walks and it has enabled me to get in much more structured walking with her.
She probably wears it more than Kodee will be (I'm dealing w/ some dominance issues and my 5 year old in the house), but she associates it with walks and her ears perk up whenever she hears me getting it to put on her.
I didn't do any conditioning with Buddy on the prong collar, I just put it on and started using it. I got it for the same reason as you, the pulling, so I wasn't to concerned if he became collar wise with it. I let him do his own self correcting and let it go at that. I can now walk him on a flat collar and he doesn't pull me at all.
I have found another benefit with it since he is very collar wise to it and that is if he gets to silly in the house and I put the collar on without attaching a leash and he settles right down. JMHO
Thanks, all. I do plan to use the prong for the correction phase, eventually, just not yet. Right now I want to use the prong just for walking, but I still don't want him to be collar-wise. I guess my question should have been: Can I go ahead and use the prong for walks now, without the 2 weeks conditioning ahead of time, and still do the conditioning over the next 2 weeks (when he's just running around off lead in the house) so he will not be collar-wise once we start the correction phase of training (which I'll probably start around 6 weeks from now when he's 8 mos old). Or will simply using the prong right away for walks make him collar wise?
(I hope my question in making sense - sorry if I'm not being clear).
I am pretty sure Buddy became collar wise to the prong because I didn't do any conditioning first by putting the collar off and on several times a day with sometimes him wearing several collars at once.
I did do that with his e-collar and he hasn't become collar wise to it so I would say that if you don't want him to become collar wise to the prong, do the conditioning first before you attach a leash to it. JMHO
I guess I will control myself and make myself wait and do the 2 week conditioning before I ever use it to walk him with. Better safe than sorry, and it sounds like dogs can be collar-wise pretty easily....
I'm certainly NOT recommending this (it was before I knew any better), but I did not do any conditioning with my dobe. I just put it on him when we went for a walk and he decided it was worth the corrections just to get out of the yard and explore!
