I hope this is ok to post here, I know it's not a training question...
I need to order new ID tags for Kodee, and I can't remember if stainless steel or brass lasts longer. I had some other tags that had to be replaced not long after I bought them due to the engraving "wearing off" and I can't remember what material they were. Which material will the engraving last longest in?

The brass ones seem to last longer I think. The engraved ones you get from the machines do tend to wear off and get really scratched up. We used to have an old guy at our swap meet who did tags the old fashion way. He used plain heavy duty aluminum and stamped the info. in with a hammer and dies. They didn't look fancy, but they lasted forever. I miss him....

I have only had the brass ID tags that are riveted onto the collar like these ones, I don't like anything haging off my dog's neck:
I particulary love the tags from http://www.fetchingtags.net. I have gotten a couple from them and they are deeply engraved plus you can get personalized messages put on them so they are fun too!
Stainless Steel is a more durable material in an absolute sense, but a tag made from either will easily work for the life of your dog. SS will hold up better, especially if a number of tags will be jingling & rubbing together.
Another thing you might want to consider is getting a tag that rivets onto the collar. Those have lasted me longer than any tags that hang. BTW that's an awsome pic Nicole!
I use the brass tags riveted on the collar like Jennifer mentioned. They hold up very well, after about 5-6 years the rivet needs to be replaced, the stamp is always legible.
I also have a brass 1963 Rabies hang tag that I found in the '80's. I carried it on my key chain for about 10 years. The printing is still very legible, but the hole (after 10 years on my key chain) had enlarged to the point of risking loosing it.
