i sure have appreciated everyone's help on the boards so far, as we have a pretty new chocolate lab named lexie (see pic below), and i've had a LOT of questions/concerns! another question: do we need to give her heartworm medicine and flea/tick medicine? i just don't know too much about dogs, so thought i'd ask. lexie had 2 rounds of worming done before i brought her home, but i haven't taken her to the vet. i'm very nervous about vaccinations, too, after all i've been reading here on the boards. anyway, just wondering about the heartworm and flea/tick thing...thanks so much, everyone!
There is heartworm in every state, but you'll see on that thread that not everyone uses the preventative, and that there are times of year when it's much less of a threat.
I do use it on my guys, who are adopted, and I also don't have a reliably cold enough, long enough period to skip it in winter.
It is advisable to keep them on the heartworm preventative year round no matter where you live. The 'plus' about many of the heartworm preventatives is that they safeguard against select intestinal parasites that your dog may still encounter even in the cold months. You won't begin the heartworm preventative until about 5 months of age. As far as flea and tick care goes, I only use it when I think there will be a concern for it (but I also live in AZ!); so that you may discontinue during the winter months. Frontline and Advantix seem to work best from what I have heard from clients; however Advantix is fatal to cats if ingested (just fyi).
You can definitely start them that early, as the medication is approved for the age...however, dogs are not close to the weight that they are going to be at 5-6 mo at the age of 10 weeks. So ppl, usually just wait so they can get the weight dosage without having to buy a few new Rx's or at least decreases the times they have to switch it.
