In Preparation for Scutzund obedinance training, the Dogs Shoulder is level with your Left Leg, and the Dog is always on your left side.
Even when out walking our Dogs have to stay in that postition
and the word we use for this is 'VOOT'
Of course periodically they are given the chance to wander and relieve themselves and the term we use for this is 'have a Wee-Wee'
then the Word VOOT' is said and the Dog returns to the Left Side of me
If the Dog is called from a distance, the Word 'HEEERRR' is shouted or said, and the Dog comes and Sits in front of you,
He must sit dierctly in front and close to you for a few seconds, until you give the command VOOT' and the Dog then goes around you on your right side and Sits by your Left Leg, a small reward is given in training when he sits at the front of you, and then as he returns to your left side, another reward is given but only in training
The Dogs are not allowed to pull in front of you at any time
Baby 'Goran' trys to get tnrough the Two Gates at home first after work, but i will stop him twenty times each time if i have too, until he stays outside until i give the word HEERRR. because that is the word we use on a recall on the working field
Hope this is not too long an explaination of what we do in Belgium
All, Thanks for the feedback! This is such a great forum with sooo many knowledgable people! My take away is that there is no right or wrong answer, as long as I have control over her. I do have the most control when her shoulder is level with my left leg, more in the "formal" heal position.
I have been varying it up, letting her get in front a bit and then changing directions. When we change directions, she walks perfectly in a loose leash manner. I think it is because she is anticipating what we will do next since she knows that we will eventually turn around and continue in the direction we were going.
Do you have any tips on keeping her attention in a walk? She isn't food driven which has made it a little challenging.
