Thanks for the replies. I checked on Mierra at lunch and she went out and went pee and poo... She had semi firm stool.
I do have a question.. someone mentioned their dog had a serious bacterial imbalance.. When I first took her they did take a stool sample and they said "everything looked okay" exept they did say there was a slight bacterial imbalance. They gave her five pills.. I was hesitent to give them to her because out of my ignorance I thought maybe the vet was just tryin to sell some meds.. I could be wrong though. I wonder if I should start them.. Ill keep you guys informed.
Do you know what the pills are, did they tell you what they were meant to treat?
I would probably start there as it doesn't seem to be clearing on its own.
I would also be adding probiotics in supplement form as well as yogurt or kefir to help regain balance and using Pedialyte to make sure she is fully hydrated and not further stressing her system.
As for what we used to treat my pups bacteria and parasite problem.....this isnt meant to be taken as medical advice but rather as an example of what I would be expecting from a doctor for a pup who had chronic loose stools.
My pup had to take a full 14 day dose of eurythromiacin (broad spectrum antibiotic)for the salmonella, Campylobacter and E-coli overgrowths, and possibly to control the spiroketes.... but I have no idea what those are even after trying to research.
7 prefilled syringes of yellow sweet tasting medicine called Sulfadimethoxine or brand name Albon (antibiotic-like sulpha drug) for the coccidia.
And a dose of Panacur to get rid of the giardia hookworms and whipworms followed by starting monthly interceptor one week later.
We are still fighting to keep the worms gone and have some butt scooting issues, it would help though if he quit catching and eating rodents Im sure.
He was in pretty bad intestinal shape though, he had a distended belly and his skin was flaky and dry from the worms. His stools were never watery but never firm either.
I had also dosed him once with panacur which had caused the worst spaghetti poop I had ever seen, it was disgusting. I want expecting much from the second dose from the vet but once again he passed so many worms that at one point I went to pick up what I thought was a clump of winter brown grass and soon realized it was dead worms (insert silly girly something nasty dance)
Ok I re-read the thread
did you mean Flagyl instead of playrl for the medication?
if so that is used to treat giardia.
Also...From what I understand one or two of the Fecal tests that the vet ran had to be taken fresh from the booty, they weren't something they can check with a pre collected stool sample
If anyone read my post about my sister's dog, this sounds an awful lot like what is going on with her dog. But, she is on Royale Canine and before that kibble.
Fecal tests are normal and they are calling it colitis because there is sometimes mucous.
I am sure they have checked for worms, too. This dog is rarely outside of the house or even on grass (pee pee pads) and has always been very protected in the house.
