Could someone please tell me the appropriate age to run or bike with a dog? I have an 8 month old puppy that we have exercised through ball chasing, bite work, and swimming. Is he old enough to begin running along side a bike without endangering his physical development? Thanks.
I ran my dog along my bike at 8 months. She’s a year now. I’m sure you are riding slow. The dog is just trotting along. The important thing is for you to be careful. I put my seat down lower then normal in case the dog pulls me of balance. I keep the dog on my left. It’s a good way to use and practice the heel command.

Nancy, You might want to wait until the dog is at least a year old. Biking the dog on hard surfaces causes a lot of stress on joints that are still developing. If you do decide to start roadworking your dog keep a close eye on his pads. They can wear down quickly and it takes a lot of time for them to heal back up. I had my last dog up to twenty miles in one session. I worked him up to it though even though he was in great shape because of ball chasing. There is a product called the Springer that mounts on the seatpost and takes about 75% of the dog's force from the pulling. I have found them selling for about 40 bucks. It really works great and I recommend it to anyone who wants to roadwork their dog. Have a nice day,Dave
I have answered this 6,342,567 times, DO NOT OVER EXERCISE your puppy. DO NOT JOG WITH HIM UNTIL HE IS 12 to !$ MONTHS OLD. There is no hurry (except in our minds) and there is a lot to loose. Like bad hips.
