I have a 11 week old pup that I got for PPD, is it important for him lear how to heel? and if yes, at what age should I start taining this. I'm already using marker training on him on staying at by my side on walks. Is this ok? will it help? or should I stop?
Teaching a dog to heel is an element of control.
And owning a ppd requires that you be able to control it, so any ppd should have excellent OB.
Just as an FYI though, there is no way to tell at 11 weeks if a dog will have what it takes to be a ppd, so relax and let the puppy enjoy being a puppy........
When should I start doing big time OB? I was told that with a pup I HOPE to do PPD work that I should focus on just bite work for a long time. I'm not sure if this is true or not. But I was also told (I know so many people say so many things and some are true but most are not, but unfortunatly I'm so new at this that I have trouble telling the tham apart) that if you puppie thats going to be a working dog, that if you do not master OB at a young age that the dog will learn that it can do bad things(not heel, jump up, hard recall and so forth). Can you give me some REAL insite please?
Real insight? It's all about making it fun and motivational for the puppy and using reward items or food to shape the behaviors you desire.
It's both as simple and as hard as that. Be consistent, train everyday in short periods ( no more than 10 min. sessions, remember, a puppy has a short attention span and is immature ) and have *fun* - It needs to be fun for *both* of you, and you should never lose sight of that.
