Japan is beautiful. I've been there once before and spent a good deal of time in Osaka and Kyoto. I'd love to go back.
As far as dogs there it was amazing to see so many well bred dogs in every day public places. Maybe it was the part of the country I was in but every one of them just glowed with good health and grooming. The most common breed I saw in Osaka (I don't really recall seeing any dogs in Kyoto) was shiba inu, but I did see some cocker spaniels, a golden retriever, a siberian husky, several chow, and a poodle. In the basement of my friend's apartment there was a italian restraunt run by a very nice Australian couple who had a dog friendly restraunt which is super rare in that country. The little box by the kitchen had a very big Irish Setter sleeping next to the cash register that would occasionally pop up with her feet on the counter to say "hello".
There is a very nice papillon kennel based out of southern Japan. Most of their bloodlines trace back to a few kennels in Sweden but I am exploring the option.
Any idea what kind of import fees I have to look forward to? quarinteen procedures? what kind of records I'll need? Anyone know of a website or a book I should be looking at? I'm doing some serious searching and am hoping to have a roster of 5 dogs over the next 3 - 5 years to start with.
Melissa:
I've never done it with dogs, but have bought two horses from Europe (one in Germany, one in Belgium) and would happily share my experiences from it.
The biggest eye opener was the cost of shipping them. Holy cow, I thought human airfare was expensive.
