I've heard from other dog owners that Valzaben dewormer for livestock is safe and effective for dogs on preventing tapeworm, hookworm, whipworm, and some other parasites. I've researched on google also and from what I've read the dosage is 1cc for every 10 lbs of body weight. Even vets have used it before??
I'm just wondering if anyone here has ever used it, or has anything negative to say about it? Someone told me they'd heard a study had been done by vets they found Valbazen to have long term effects, but I've yet to find this study online.
I use fenbendazole (Panacur), I've never used albendazole. Panacur will not kill the flea vector tapeworms, it will kill the rabbit and deer vector tapeworms (double dose for 3 days). Droncit/praziquantel is the wormer I use for tapeworms.
It's always a good idea to rotate wormers so you don't end up with resistant parasites. Fenbendazol, ivomec, pyrantel, and praziquantel are all wormers that I use.
I only worm when I have evidence of parasites, that will minimise harmful effects of any chemical wormers I use.
How often do you rotate your wormers? And which is the most common tapeworm? I think tapeworm is the worst parasite in my area, because my surrounding neighbors don't treat their yards for fleas...Also, how common is Giardia?
I will definitely check out my local feedstore and see what they have.
I might use the same wormer twice in a row for my adult dogs. Puppies get Pyrantel 3-4 times, then Ivomec or Panacur. If I suspect Giardia then I will do the three day panacur treatment.
The type of tapeworms depends on what your dog eats more of, fleas or rabbit and deer guts.
I think Giardia occurrence depends on the location, what the dog has access to (toilets, poop, ground water and streams), and their susceptibility/immune system. Runny, stinky greenish poop can be symptoms of Giardia.
Panacur paste is sold in tubes labeled for horses and cows. There are also a couple of horse wormers with ivomec and praziquantel/droncit that kills tapeworms. You just need to make sure to give the correct dose for the weight of the animal. You can kill puppies with an overdose of Ivomec (I can still see in my mind's eye the neighbor telling me about his litter of 6 week old pups that died from Ivomec poisoning), and probably any of the other wormers too. I think Ivomec is the most dangerous because it is so concentrated, 1/10th cc of the injectable is the dose for 7 1/2 lb. With the paste a kidney bean size glop is enough for 225 lb.
Ivomec can kill Collie breeds, and you want to make sure that the dog is heartworm negative before giving it to any dog.
There are also people who use food grade diatomatious earth to control parasites in their dogs. Leerburg sells it.
