I'm also more for the ball reward and reward the dog when he does it correct, instead of correcting him. Ok if he doesn't sit quickly enough you can give a little tap on his behind when you say sit and as soon as he does it reward with your voice. But the dog is still very young as long as the dog knows his commands, the speed and you can build in a little later I think.
And a reward with the ball does not mean you have to give the ball each time. You can get the ball out your pocket swing it around you a couple of times dog chases the ball around you and then make the ball disapear again in your pocket and put the dog back on the heel and continue. You don't have to do this each time offcourse.
The only Mastakes our dogs make are the ones we teach them! If your dog is lollygagging that is because you have reinforced him for it, or you arn't making it fun for him. Don't correct him, correct your self!
Good luck!
OK I get the point. Now its 8 against 1. You guys win. UNCLE!LOL

There, there Chucky we still love you. Nice post, we'll have to get a training update on this dog in the future. Just kidding. . . I otta put that in my signature for the board. You know, like a disclaimer.
Ok guys. Some training update to you since my post - I went back to basics with food. Works fine: have noticed improvements with down (no crawling), still need to improve sit and stand as it still carries 1 extra step. Any thoughts on this, especially sit. :
Simply ignore the behavior. If he is not sitting when you ask for it. Heel him off and ask again, no food until he gets it right. He is a puppy, but as long as he has the food drive USE IT. Another thing that has not been asked here is how long are you "working" this pup? Sessions should be short and sweet, preferably several times a day, and you want to leave the dog wanting more, not worn out and bored from being yanked around. I know it is hard to quit when they are high in drive and doing well, but it is better than burnt and flat.
