What I am posting below was just received by a professional associate of mine. I'm not sure if the posting should go here or maybe in the Hall of Shame.
I would not generally make such a post feeling that it may just be hear say, but the contact info for the person/group making the allegation is attached.
Moderators, if this post isn't a good fit for Leerburg I'll understand it being deleted.
Here it is:
This email is for all breeders and anyone who may be contacted by the Washington County (Missouri) Sheriff's Department or their captain, Charles LaLumondiere, seeking a bloodhound for SAR work. We adopted a lovely, healthy 1 year old bloodhound male (Mosley) to them a little over a year ago. He was going to be kept at home by the Captain and used by the sheriff's department for SAR and Community Outreach. They knew Mosley had fully recovered from a localized outbreak of demodectic mange at the time of adoption. They contacted me 3 weeks ago insisting on a refund of the adoption donation or to be given a new dog because Mosley was no longer "pretty" enough for them to use. After further investigation, I discovered that, contrary to everything I had been told, all the education I provided prior to the adoption, and our adoption agreement provisions, they had kept Mosley outside in a pen and had recently sent him to a "training facility" (after having him almost a year!) where he had lost most of his fur and dropped 30 lbs., allegedly in a 2 week time span The sheriff's department refused to bring the dog back to us (as is required by the adoption contract) and one of our foster homes had to travel to the "training facility" last night to get him. This facility wound up being a old trailer in the middle of nowhere with Mosley in a 4x4 outside, dirt-floored pen. No food was present, no straw or bedding provided and his water bowl was a block of ice. Air temperature was 24 degrees. We took Mosley immediately to an emergency vet. He was extremely malnourished, dehydrated, missing 75% of his fur due to generalized demodectic mange, anemic, had open wounds on his head indicative of being hit, possibly frostbitten paws, underlying sebhorreic (spelling?) skin, cellulitis and whip worms (we're still waiting for further test results to come back).
I am going to be posting pictures on our website and they are truly horrific. I am absolutely sick about this situation. The very people we trust for our safety have, in my opinion, horribly abused and neglected this dog. We are still undergoing further investigations and exploring all remedies available by law. For Mosley, he is safe and beginning treatment for his many ailments, which will probably take months and cost, at a minimum, several hundred dollars.
Please, please, please do not allow another bloodhound to suffer this fate. Permission to cross-post is granted and appreciated.
