Has she been pooping and peeing after you feed her?
I also hope she started nursing on mom.
Have you noticed her getting stronger every day? Or has she been declining?
we have found that weighing all puppies twice daily is really the best way to judge their progress.
You want to see a weight gain every day, for a GSD we are happy if they gain 50 grams per day for the first week or so. Anything less than that, and we watch more closely.
I would weigh all pups, not just the small one.
you can sometimes avert a problem by being vigilant for the first couple of weeks
I looked all over for a gram scale and can't find one. I can only find one in ounces. I am going to have to order one online.
The little pup is dying. I feel horrible. It's weird, just all of sudden she started acting lethargic and weak and would only eat on and off, now she won't eat at all. And she's just laying there breathing really shallow.
and it was pooping and peeing normal?
that is strange, im no professional though.
did the mother reject it, or was it just that it wasnt strong enough to nurse
Could it be because she didn't get colostrum? Or maybe she just had a defect.
Vanessa, don't feel like it was your fault, you did a very good job with her.
Sometimes they just won't make it no matter what you do.
Sorry, I'm responding so late. She died that morning. I was actually getting ready to leave to have her put down because I just couldn't take it anymore, but she died before I left. We were stimulating her to pee and poo and she mostly peed, rarely pooped. She was warm, dry (although I did wipe her with a damp paper towel every now and then to simulate mom's licking) We were feeding her every two hours and then she just stopped wanting to eat.
It was pretty horrible because she laid there and just breathed for hours, and I knew she was going to die so I was just hoping she would let go, she seemed to be fighting, which made it so sad. I talked to the vet over the phone and she basically said there's not a whole lot they can do.
I still need to get a gram scale. I've called every place I can think of and everyone only has oz. scales. The other pups are doing great though. Two have their eyes open!
