Hi Everyone,
I have a small problem that I need some advise on, my Shepherd 5 months, seems to be really insecure when we meet strange dogs. All his other behavior is great, excelent prey drive and very confident otherwise. He is almost a picture perfect working puppy, I have not had a single other problem with him. But- as soon as we meet strange dogs, he will go out to meet them, sniff a bit then he cowers under me and barks and tries to jump in my arms, I have tried to praise him and comfort him showing him the other dogs are not a threat. I think he is a bit jelous as well.
With the dogs he normally trains with he is dominate and playful, so I am a bit frustrated and am wondering how I should try to solve this problem, my ideas are not working.

Don't praise or coddle him when he is barking and acting scared. You are reinforcing the behavior. You are in effect praising the dog for acting this way.
The only good way to work on dog socialization is with animals that you know. Lots of work here. I don't think it is a good idea to be messing around with other dogs that you don't know.
I bet that your pups confidence will improve with age and further good socialization.
i agree, and you defenatly dont want to introduce new dogs because you dont know exactly where they've been, and what they might have.
play games he can win to help build his confidence.
Thanks guys,
I had thought that assuring him might build confidence, I have been told so many things from everyone I'm sure you know how that is, I will try your suggestion and just act indiffrent and try to avoid other dogs as I can, altho that is hard to do. Any more thoughts are welcome on the subject.
