I know you shouldn't exercise a dog straight after eating so would it be ok to take Max for his walk before feeding when I get home after work? Or would it be bad for him to do that when he hasn't eaten in about 9 hours?

IMHO, it would be okay, but the thing is, you want to let him rest an hour or two depending on the intensity of the exercise you give.
I feed three of my dogs when I get home and then I go work with the other three for a couple hours. Then I work with the three that already ate and when I am done with that, the first ones are ready to be fed. WHEW

I would think it is alright to walk the dogs before meal times. I do it with my 5 month old, but I let her cool down & rest before I feed her. The duration depends on how much exertion there was during the walks, but I tend to be conservation and wait an hour.
If you are worried about stomach acid & bile, you can feed some treats during your walk. ) Use that time to do some training, since your dog will be very willing to work for treats.

Yes. Several of the vet info sites about bloat say to wait an hour after exercise to feed the dog, and then after the food to wait two hours before exercising.
I understand the no-exercise-after-meals part, but have not looked up the part about none before eating.
Still, I'm adding it here for now. There were many mentions.
I always heard not to feed a dog after heavy exercise.... but never heard anything about taking consideration on how long its been since the last meal when exercising. My dogs eat once a day and exercise all throughout the day. Thats alot more than 9 hours since their last meal.....

I hadn't either until I looked online today, after reading the O.P.
It's not that I read anything that said not to exercise on an empty stomach -- just not to feed them immediately AFTER real exercise.
