As a side note I would never, ever suggest confining a dog via these items. A crate in case of an incident can prevent a big heartache of the police having to shoot your dog for potentially attacking people or worse having your dog disappear if a vehicle glass is comprimised which happens more often than you'd think. I would only suggest using these as they are ment for. Supplying some air and keeping a car a little cooler.
Get a good crate. The life you save may be your dog's.
Sandy, they are not "just" plastic, its a very tough plastic that I cannot see a dog breaking any easier than they would break the glass window. Once they are wedged into place they are absolutely solid with zero flex and no way that I can see of breaking them or popping them out.
I have used them many times, both with and without a crate. Even if you use a crate, it stops people from reaching into the car and unlocking the door, you can keep the window further open than you normally would and not have to worry about anything.
