Hi guys. Another question for the forum: how to train my 9month old pup to do turns right way when he is off leash - usually on a straight line he goes almost leg to knee with me, but as soon I start to turn left or right he either stays 2-3 steps away from me or in worst scenario, especially with left turns, gets all mixed up.
Is there any other way to correct it except prong collar and leash and me carrying treat in my hand?
Treat in a hand works for 5-10 minutes, then I have to call his name once again to direct his attention to me?
Vagabund,
Don't correct your dog for this - he doesn't know how to negotiate turns - adding pressure will likely make it worse!
Try this:
Sit your dog next to you in a heel position.
Turn counter clockwise for a 1/4 turn and ask him to heel.
If he doesn't back up with you to find the position gently brush his front feet so that he begins to back up and then reward when he's close or even better in position.
try this over and over until he doesn't need your help to move and can do 1/4, 1/2 and full turns going backwards.
The you move out of position and ask him to come find it.
All of these excercises will help your dog have a stronger understanding of what heel means and how to find that position from different angles and movements.
This should help square it away.

In off leash position I am trying to make one or two rounds with left, right and u-turns in between, right works the best and u-turn is bearable, but in left turn the dog is usually in front of me or either in fron to the right. Tried today with 1/4 and 1/2 turns, so far not a big difference. I am assuming more practice is needed or change of tactics.
