Hi all...wondered if anyone's dogs have had problems eating kidneys?
I've been feeding beef and chicken livers and hearts along with the usual chicken quarters, turkeys wings/necks, and assorted beef, bison, venison, pork portions without any problems at all.
I had a chance to add beef kidneys to the menu and when I say there were major league gas issues...I know it's not good table conversation, but has anyone else encountered this?
She literally ran me out of the entire house. I felt bad for her knowing that was probably killing her on the inside, too.

Mike,
I feed beef kidneys occasionally (2 -3 times a month) to our canine crew - haven't experienced any problems, other than if I feed too much the poop gets a bit runny. So I limit the portions, slice them up, remove the fatty fibrous centers and mix them with a good dollop of veggies that have been through the food processor. Our old Airedale mutt is especially fond of them.

The doggie chiropractor specifically asked me to add beef kidney to Quincy's diet. I asked why but I will be damned if I remember if she answered me. My butcher is out. I will have to call and ask why. I hate when I just blindly do as I am told. Although my husband doesn't think it happens often enough.

I feed kidney occasionally, and haven't noticed any problems related specifically to it. They seem to like it. I do notice that unlike some RAW feeders who claim an improvement in gas, my dogs are still pretty gassy. I was hoping for that to go away, so you are not alone there. I heard that giving papain enzyme will help with gas. Has anyone heard of this, or have any knowledge of the safety or usefullnes of this for dogs?

mine doesn't have gas issues except for this instance...none of her other food items ever give her problems.
but man oh man, did these beef kidneys!!!
I wonder if there's something in the kidneys that her gut wasn't prepared for? Sorry for the unpleasantness of the topic
friends, never again!

My Doberman is worst but all get gas on Raw. Kidneys are bad for us. Tonight pork stomach with the chicken and the house smells. I always tell my wife that is just good digestion when it comes to me.

Hi Mike, Will Rambeau gave me an awful time for posting about a similar "unpleasant topic" a while back , but don't sweat it, we've all had questions we hesitate before asking... and we ask anyway!
I wonder if it isn't simply an issue of your dog not being accustomed to this particular ingredient. My dog went through phases of bad gas or loose stool with ground beef and pork (muscle meats) when I was first adding them to his diet. I worried about intolerance, but I just cut back portions and frequency of those things then slowly ramped them back up - today he has no problems with either. He'll still get gas occasionally (and VERY occasionally it's quite bad...) but I chalk that up to regular fluctuations in his own system, things he eats in the woods, etc.
You might try just minimally including it in the diet on and off for a while and see if the gas gets better, or not. There are some foods that are traditionally reliable for their flatulence factors, but sometimes just being NEW to a system will cause an initial, unusually strong reaction as well.
For what it's worth, kidneys might be my all time LEAST favorite meat to deal with... the anatomy is fascinating, but the smell just turns my stomach and I can never get it off my hands... I don't blame any dog who's intestines say "whoa, hold up!" the first time they encounter this lovely offal...
Just my 2 cents.

ha..never heard Will complain about that topic
When I first walked into the house, I thought I either smelled vomit or feces...that's how bad the entire house smelled:O She never acted ill, though. Was up to her usual 100 mph self
Anyway, I got the kidneys because they were cheap and it was the first time I'd seen them in my SuperWalmart...they usually have beef hearts already cut up and they always have beef liver and chicken hearts, livers, and gizzards. They have tripe, too but it's bleached so we pass on those.
Even when I was giving Brenna the vegetable blend stuff, she never had this kind of reaction!!
Anyway, she doesn't have these kinds of issues with the other raw I give her...and I still feed about a tablespoon of the organic kelp we got from Leerburg, an egg or two a week, and the occasional peanut butter/apple slices. Even that stuff doesn't really give her (or me) any problems.
Thanks for all the replies...thank goodness for Glade
