Is license trainer something new in your area? I haven't heard of dog trainers being licensed for what they do, but they do have a lot of reference and a bit fame in the dog community. If you want to work with police dogs, you need a lot of expereince. Maybe even get involved with the policework a bit to understand what kinds of dogs they need.
It is always a good chance you need to start somewhere below the ladder and find your way up to the top. Very few who are considered top and well respected in the dog community like Michael, Ivan, and others.
"It's better to be an optimist who is sometimes wrong than a pessimist who is always right"
perhaps i should have said certification-meaning the trainer went to some training school.
Me-i know that that slip of paper doesn't mean you are worth anything as a trainer-but that is what they want.
i am not set on any local school-if it is not a good program-then i simply will not go-i will wait and persue another avenue until my situation changes. I am still in college-not necisarily doing what i want to be doing, which is why i am willing to not finish and do the training school.
But if the schools in the area really are not good-then i will finish my degree.
and before anyone says to always finish college-i am definately a music major-the same amount of money/job security no matter what degree you have.
There is also no agreement on what a "certificate" is in regards to be a dog trainer.
There are only two or three certificates in this entire country that are valid ( The Master Trainer's Certification from Tom Rose school being one of them ) and there are at least 50 other certificates from phony schools that mean *nothing*.
If was hiring for a big training kennel and someone tried to use one of those certificates to impress me I'd howl with laughter and boot them out the door.
It's kind of like the APDT "title", does a real trainer need something like that? The answer is no and stuff like this just exists to fool an uneducated public.
Let the buyer beware!
And Mal, if the shelters around you are so ignorant that they fall for the "certificatio"n scam, ask them to read this forum for a while, maybe it will help educate them.
Mallory,
I'd be glad to continue this discussion via PM with you as I think that the privacy issue is important to you ( although I pretty much already know what school you're talking about based on where you live. )
