We bought an 11 mth old cockapoo who obviously ran his previous owners' home. Lots of dominance issues that we are making progress with, but I'm assuming much of his trouble is prey drive? Mouthy, likes to snatch and run (we don't chase after him.) He is now on a leash full-time because we simply can't trust him off leash. He has good days when "no" and "drop it" means something to him, and bad ones when he whines and refuses. (The 'rebellious teen' label suits him on bad days).
I think curbing the dominance issues will just take some time, but the snatch-and-run and mouthiness is a constant fight. Will
he grow out of this? We've had 2 other male puppies/young adults and they didn't have the obsession with grabbing stuff that this dog has. I exercise him at least twice a day and do training at least every other day, time permitting.
Which dvds would you recommend? I'm not sure if it is just prey drive or still a dominance issue. Also, would the obedience training ebook help?
...I need to add that he doesn't growl when we pick up/take a toy or near his food or anything like that. He knows to stay off the furniture, now, can leed, sit, down, etc on a leash. Off leash, tho, he has no respect unless he's in a compliant mood. We've only had him a month, tho, so I'm assuming he'll get it or end up on a prong collar...
I'm mostly interested in the best dvd for our needs at this time - mouthing/nipping and snatching stuff--since I can only get one.
One thing you can read that may help you is Ed's eBook Groundwork to Establish Pack Structure with Adult Dogs http://www.leerburg.com/pdf/packstructure.pdf There's another one on puppies too you can find in the Leerburg eBook section. I just thought the adult dog one would be better since it's your dog's second home and because of his age. I'm sure you'll get video recomendations too.
Thanks, 2 votes for pack structure, which my hubby and I were considering. I looked at the puppy pack structure since he's 11 mths but I'll check out the adult one.
So, it's getting him to understand that everything belongs to me, huh? LOL. He's pretty pig-headed...we try the switch with a toy but he just grins and keeps on going. We have an 11 yo daughter and this has been a good learning experience for her. She is learning how to control him, also.
