Given the state of the world these days; search and rescue dogs have been called upon too many times for comfort. The dogs that worked NY were subjected to the worst conditions that any animal or human could possibly tolerate. The Oklahoma City boming was also high on the list in risk factors. Dogs and handlers from all over the country came to aid in both disasters. And yet perhaps; if they would have had more to help; maybe just one more person could have been found alive.
One way to look at the need is..if you have the training and the dog to do it with..and..you get a call asking for help to find a lost child and you find that lost child; the need establishes itself. Or..even if you don't get called; at least your community and surrounding area or what ever your territory is..knows that there is help available.
I believe the need for highly trained dogs is upon us and perhaps we as a people need to persue higher levels of training for us and our dogs so a difference can be made.
I'm curious.
How often do SAR teams really get called out?
Second, are they called out soon enough to ever do any good?
How often a SAR team gets called out really depends on the working relationships that the team has with the local authorities and other SAR teams.
With respect to how soon a team is called out...again it depends on the working relationships with the authorities. Unfortunately it is never too late and I'm sad to say that providing closure for families can be a big part of being involved in SAR.
