barbara' i am curious, where did you get the idea
to use benadryl for motion sickness. did your vet
tell you this? i agree with jeannette, i would not
use it anymore. you may try a little dramamine,
it's the most used med for motion sickness in
humans. ask your vet if it's safe to use and how
much to give. one of the side effects can be
drowsiness so if your taking the pup to training
you may want to skip this.
Per the advise of my vet years ago and reconfirmed again prior to use; Benedril child formula (1/2 teaspoon 30 minutes prior) did work to ( I realize it is an antihistime) aleviate motion sickness in some of my dogs. However; it didn't work with Dallas.
The massaging of the ear base is working along with her increased age (now 18 weeks old).
The weather here yesterday didn't allow us to be outside for any education sessions; so...we drove the 45 minutes to the PetSmart store. During the drive; I massaged her ear and no vomit..just drool which is a step in the right direction. The store atmosphere was a great learning experience for her and gave us the opportunity to improve our leash training utilizing their iles, obsticals and borrowed a squeaky toy for the day's use since I had forgotton hers. Dallas was also exposed to many people and their dogs who were a great assest to her socialization.
The ride home was drool..but..it's getting better!
Jeanette and bk4jon: Benadryl is used for allergic reactions, nausea/vomiting, motion sickness, and as a sleeping aid. The generic ingredient is diphenhydramine, and because it induces an anticholinergic response, is appropriate for use in all the above situations. Next time you go to the drug store, check out the labels and you'll see that diphenhydramine is the active ingredient for Benadryl, Tylenol PM, Nytol, Excedrin PM, etc. In people medicine we prescribe it for all of the above indications. The vet is right on this one.
