Related to my problems with frontline use with one of my dogs --
Can anyone tell me the story with lyme vaccine? We use two vets for various things -- one makes house calls, etc. -- and one of them pushes the lyme vaccine (we live in Columbia County, NY, highest incidence of lyme int he nation) and the other vet hospitalis so against it that they don't even carry it.
Can anyone direct me to alternatives for lyme prevention? As I say, our geography here demands it.
thanks - michael

Personally, I wouldn't touch the Lyme vaccine. I've read a number of bad things about it. I'd rather treat the disease itself than risk long-term health problems from vaccinosis.

It was suggested to me here as well because I have a dog that hunts in mid brush. I did some research about this and the lepto vaccines and decided I would just use a tick preventative and take my chances with having to treat for lyme disease as this is fairly uncommon in my neck of the woods.
I must admit though if tick bites with a high likelyhood of lyme are expected no matter what the environment I choose to keep my dogs in I might opt for the vaccine.

I have heard good things about Preventic collars, particularly from hunters whose dogs are really exposed to ticks. Won't prevent Lyme's but supposedly does a good job of repelling ticks.
We have deer ticks here in South Dakota that transmit Lyme desease. If you check your dog over carefully after having them out in the woods, infected ticks don't transmit the disease unless they are attached for at least 24 hours.
I don't use the Lyme vaccine but I have used repellents like Frontline just because I don't like pulling the little suckers off.
