My nearly 9 month old up is still very exuberant when meeting new people. (jumping and mouthing) Our living situation has been such that we were somewhat isolated from neighbors and didn't have people coming to the house on a regular basis. (and my bad that I didn't get her out more in public places...)
We are moving w/in the next couple of weeks to a new house and the neighbors are great (and very close). I want to enlist their help in improving Chula's manners when it comes to meeting new folks.
Should I start inside the house or outside?
I was thinking not to use treats, since just getting to say hi seems to be reward enough for her, but I'm not sure about that one. She is very food motivated...
Also, when I'm outside on a walk, she's on the prong. Yesterday she gave herself a pretty hard yank when we met one of our neighbors while I was walking her. I put her in a sit and asked him to approach and just let her sniff his hand and not to pet her. She sat well for a few seconds and then bounced up at him and gave herself a correction. She yelped and then was very submissive to him, wagging her tail but on her belly (obviously not what I want). I think she thought that somehow he corrected her... That was the end of that session...
I like the control that I have w/ the prong, but I don't want that to happen again...
Sorry for the rambling post...
PS she's good w/ distractions (people, bikers, dogs) when viewed from 10-15 ft away, but anything closer and she loses it!

Hi Lynne.
Does she jump on you as well?
I would start treating her with a high value treat when ALL 4 feet are on the floor.
Make sure that the people she is approaching are not talking to her in an excitable manner and even tire her out before sessions.
People need to be calm around her so she learns to be calm as well. Anything that has excitement to it will probably cause her to become excited and want to spring around as well.

Carol, she almost never jumps on me.
I will get her good and tired and then get the neighbor to help me.
I can see that I need to set this up in advance and very carefully explain what is and isn't allowed. Lucky for me both sets of neighbors on either side of me are dog lovers...
Carol, I took your suggestion and got her good and tired and tried again, with specific instructions to the neighbor to ignore her; specifically, no eye contact and no talking to her.
It worked beautifully! I carried on a face to face conversation with the neighbor for a few minutes, and Chula eventually just laid down.
It's amazing to me that she settled right down when she realized that she was not going to get any attention.
It's a good start anyway...now repeat 20 times and move on to the next step!
