I did a search and did not come up with anything so I figured I would ask away :-) I have a friend who has a bitch about to whelp and she is contemplating weaning the pups on Embark. It is listed as for all stages but wondered if I knew of anyone with knowledge about whelping pups on it. Anyone done this or know someone who has? Is Embark appropriate for weaning? Yeah, I know you can wean to straight RAW but I don't think that that is something is willing/able to do so Honest Kitchen is the next best thing :-)
Personally, I don't wean puppies onto HK. The reason is because of the multiple ingredients.
I believe in adding it into their diet later, but when weaning pups I stick with a single ingredient for a week or so and then add different protein sources. Once my pups are eating chicken, beef, pork, rabbit, etc.. then I will add things like HK to their meals. Usually this is not before 8 weeks of age.
I am sure you can wean pups onto it, I just choose to do what I have found success with. I also do not introduce solid food like meat until as close to 4 weeks of age as possible. I have read somewhere over the years that the longer you hold off on solids, the less chance of food sensitivities down the road. The immature digestive tract is not able to deal with a lot of novel ingredients before a month of age. I know some people who brag about their pups starting to eat solid food at 2-3 weeks old. My pups may show an interest in food at that age, but I limit them to nursing and goat milk formula until 4 weeks old.
