My pup has never been particularly destructive, and generally would not bother things like remote controls, cell-phones, etc.
Until recently...
Within the span of 3 days she knocked a cellphone off the kitchen table and chewed the back cover. Next evening she chewed up a remote control. She also seems to cruise the kitchen table (not at meal times) looking for items to grab.
These instances occurred when I was geting my son ready for bed, and she was left unsupervised in the living area during this time. It's never been a problem until recently.
So, of course, no more unsupervised time out of the crate.
Is it likely that this behavior will resolve on its own? Do I need to 'set her up' and give a correction?
I have this problem with a kleptomaniac puppy. He is ALWAYS with his front paws on the counter or table looking for something to steal. Since there is rarely food left out, he is usually looking for hats/mittens/papers/dog toys that I've put up.
I cannot use the can monster since I have two other dogs in the house that are scared of sudden noises, and it wouldn't be fair to them.
I do own a Scat Mat that I had when I had a counter surfing kitty. I am sure it would work great for the dog too. I haven't had occasion to use it yet but I fully intend to if he doesn't knock it off.
A Scat Mat is a transparent mat you can put on the counter and it will zap the dog's paws. (It feels like a strong static shock, I tried it on myself.) There are 3 settings for the level of shock.
Just an alternative thought, in case you don't want to or can't use the can monster.
Thanks for the suggestions. I am bummed because she never used to do this; I'm thinking she was bored at some point and grabbed something inappropriate to chew, and decided she liked the naughtiness of it!
First things first, no more unsupervised time out of the crate.
Angela, I may try the scat mat. Available at pet stores?
