Welcome Brian. Cygnus (great name by the way....) is beautiful.
IMHO, I would take him in and have a full check up done along with x-rays.
The way you are explaining it sounds like there is something going on with him and maybe if you catch it early enough, it will be something that is reversible.....if not, certainly something that will be helped with proper management.

Hi Brian,
The pain you're describing in Cygnus (upon getting up) sounds exactly like what my pup went through when he was 6 months old - turned out to be Pano, and all they need to do is an x-ray for diagnosis. Pano is really irritating because it comes and goes and sometimes shifts legs... so it's hard to pinpoint where and when your dog is hurting - but this unpredictability is also a hallmark of Pano, which, just like growing pains, does pass on it's own with no lasting consequences (I'm pretty sure).
Good luck at the vet - I hope whatever's going on will pass quickly and that it isn't something more serious.

Thanks for the quick replies!
I have called the Vet and will be seeing him in a couple of hours - if for nothing else, some peace of mind.
Where the pain is clearly intermittent do you guys think that lends itself more to Pano? If it were dysplasia would it be a more consistent pain?
Thanks again!

With my Shep pup, it was intermittent pain both times he had pano- front leg first when he was 5 months, some days he'd really limp and other days he acted like nothing was wrong. Same with his back leg when he was almost 2yrs old. they can verify if its pano with an x-ray- it shows up as a cloudy area in his bone - hopefully that is what it is. Usually it will last a few weeks but sometimes less and it can travel from one limb to another. Its soo much fun-LOL they usually tell you to keep activity restricted until it passes which is a challenge with a pup
Dysplasia could be intermittent too though, it could just hurt more some days than others especialy if hes played harder, etc. But fingers crossed that its not that
Keep us posted what happens at the vets
Good Luck

Well thank you everyone! We are back from the vet and Cygnus has no signs of dysplasia!!
They did a few physical tests with him (ie: felt around and pulled/pushed on his hips) and then took him in for an x-ray. His hips looked fine but the vet didn't mention any signs of Pano either. We talked about Pano as a possibility but the vet didn't indicate any signs of it on the x-ray, nor at the time did I think he'd be able to see any.
In the end he dismissed it as a possible sprain or simply growing pains, which I am totally comfortable with. I've had to deal with some pretty disheartening dog dilemmas in my day and have been hoping Cygnus would lead a happy and healthy life. Seems we are still on our way with that!
Thanks again for everyones support and input. You can keep an eye on my blog to see the little guys progress.

Thats great new, I bet your relieved!! No one wants to deal with hip problems at such a young age or any age. Hes a nice looking pup by the way, I really like the DDR lines, even looked at that kennel when I was in the market for a pup but ended up going a different way (now I'm jealous
Well, enjoy your new addition as I'm sure he will keep you entertained!

That is great news. Happy to hear all is normal with the x-rays...
Sometimes Pano does not show up on the films if I am not mistaken. If you use the search function here, you will come up with quite a few good discussions about it and I think Ed and Cindy have an article on it....I will go look.....
Yep..here ya go.... PANO

I will second that Carol, when Fero had his last bout of pano in his back leg - the local vet here could not find anything on the x-rays, couldnt get him to elicite pain, nothing. They recommended me to a neurologist for an MRI or Cat Scan because they thought he had something wrong with his spinal cord. So I had to take a day off work, drive to Colorado and spend more money for the specialist to tell me hey its pano and was able to find it on his x-ray (digital, so its clearer) and was able to elecite pain in his leg where the pano was located. So sometimes the diagnosis is only as good as the vet your seeing. So Brian just keep an eye on your pup and even if it is pano it will eventually go away. Its funny too, Pano is actually sometimes called "growing pains" which your vet said he probably was going thru.

Thank you ladies. And don't you know, since his final episode which heightened my concern to bring him to the vet, he has not experienced any similar problems. Always the way I suppose.
I've read all I can about Pano, and I'll be content with that being the problem. The x-ray gave me the peace of mind that it isn't anything more serious, so now I'll just keep a close eye on him and if he starts experiencing pain elsewhere I'll have an idea of what it may be.
Thanks again for all the help - this board rocks!
