I always thought I would start Quincy in personal protection.
My love of shepherds came from my horse trainers shepherd. He took a dog trainers road ponis to train and in exchange pick a pup that the trainer kept for a year and trained.
According to the story the dog was brought back to the horse trainer at 18 mnths and my trainer worked him with the dog trainer.
I came into the picture when the dog was 3. What an awesome animal. He was a working member of the family. Very easy going until he was given the word.
He also instinctively knew the opperating hours and I would not have wanted to visit after hours.
My question is my former horse trainer remembering the time table wrong? Seemed like the training was completed young?
Also the dog was great without a "knowledgeable" dog owner?
I get the impression now that taking my dog down this path would be at the very least a large time commitment and at the very least foolish.
Also I am sure the dog was pp trained. I saw him at work. TOO cool. Again the most awesome dog I have ever met.
Also the former horse trainer is now 80 yrs old and the dog trainer has passed away.
Mmmmmmmm,
So whats the question?
If different trainers use different methods?
Do time tables for two dogs differ?
Or is the quarry about your wish to have a ppd?
Sorry I was not clear
How long does it take to do personal protection training?
At what age does it start?
How long does it take?
Can an dog be a good personal protection animal and relaxed family pet?

Michelle,
As with any dog, training and maintenance starts when you get the dog and continues through the life of the dog. You have to maintain training in order for the dog to be effective in what you have trained them for.
And yes, with the right dog (temperament, training and socialization) the dog can be a great family companion (wouldn't really say pet).
Until The Tale of the Lioness is told, the Story will Always Glorfy the Hunter
If the dog was being trained in protection, it was 18 months from the time he started (18 mos to 3 years). That's more than plenty of time to train protection, if the dog has what it takes. Then there's the maintenance as Carol said.
The story is the dog was picked as a pup and returned to the home at 1 yr maybe 18 mnths pretty much trained. The training continued for a year to mostly get the handler up to speed. I am trying to track down this dogs lineage but the owner is sketchy on the exact regestration name and spelling plus the breeder has passed away.
