I am about to begin some e collar training with my 2 1/2 year old male Golden Retriever, Wille. Wilie is a fairly "soft" dog. He is a pet, not a hunting dog. He has a typical Golden coat with lots of underfur and a fairly thick mane like most male Goldens.
Does any one have any experience using an e collar on this type of coat? Should I skip over the short prongs and start out with long prongs? In a week or so I am going to start training with the collar. Right now I am following the Leerburg Collar introduction protocols.
Hi Robert:
With a long coated dog, I would start with the longest prongs. I place the collar in the trachea area, adjust the collar for snugness. I then have the dog walk around for a few minutes, and tighten the collar. Make sure to seat the collar, so the prongs do make skin contact. You should be able to place just one finger between the neck of the dog and the collar.
Hope this helps.
