We picked up our 9 week old male GSD yesterday. He does whine for about 15 minutes when he's in his crate & then settles down with the occasional whimper. He slept all nite in the crate with 2 potty breaks, one at midnight & another at 4am. No problems he went #1 as soon as we got outside both times. When he was placed back in the crate he cries & whined for 5 minutes & went off to sleep until the next wake up at 7am.
At 7 am after a potty visit he ate all his food (whimpering whilst eating too). I then took him on a walk around the block & was fine 'til we got back home & he started whimpering again even whilst I was holding & petting him. I placed him in the crate now & with 5 minutes of lite whining he's off to sleep.
whining, normal for a pup in new enviroment? Separation from litter etc.???
Hi Ben, my GSD was a whiner when I got him home as a new pup. I can't remember how long it lasted, but it was probably a few weeks. Now at 17 months, he's still vocal. He whines when he's excited, when he wants to communicate with me, when I return home.
But it's not a worried whine, more like a communcative, chirpy whine. He talks...I guess that's the best way for me to put it.
But the worried whines...those stopped when he was young. I haven't heard him do that since. I would guess your pup will get better once he gets more secure and settled.
Yeap as Amber said totally normal for puppies. You are luckier than some as I've had pups that will cry for half an hour or more.. they howl and bark and chortle and woof and grummble themselves to sleep.
just an update: My pup quit whining after 2 days! now he just goes in to his crate & lies down & he'll fall asleep without a single note.
Keyword here for other new puppy folks: "Patience"
My son put the t-shirt he wore during track practice in with Hans when he was a pup. That helped.
Amber, my GSD is also very vocal. When he wants my attention and I am ignoring him, like right now when I'm typing on the key board, he'll poke me with his nose then come up and bark in my ear to get my attention. At that time I know to tell my son to let him out to go to the bathroom. He's learned that he can bug my son all day and nothing happens, but if he barks at me he'll get to go out and pee. So the dog learned that he had to train me because I failed to train my son
