I agree.....
Anyway, I do not really use the scent boxes as they would normally be used (so Law Enforcement and others who use them..please forgive me), and by that I mean I really only use them with pups who like to mouth the source AND the weather has been really crappy and I did not want to wait any longer since she would go to the HRD fridge everytime we went in the barn.
I put the scent jar in the box and then bring the puppy in. We walk around the boxes just relaxed at first and when the puppy shows interest I start talking to them with encouragement and I reach down and place a treat on top of the box while they are interested in the box.
Depending on the intensity of the interest, we stick with that for a while, or we move forward.
I skipped the first step with Emmie since she just went to the right box and tried to stuff her whole face in the 3" hole and was digging at the box.
I do not like aggressive alerts for cadaver....too risky of damage to a real body or destruction of possible evidence in my opinion, so I did stop her just when I noticed she was going to start digging by rewarding her for putting her face in there.
I so keep a ball or tug in with the source as well and will opening the box slightly and letting her pull the tug out as a reward...she loves to tug and also to chase the ball. Not great at fetch, high possessiveness so it will be tug until return is better.
I am not sure if this was a good explanation or even what you were looking for, but I am not real great at explaining everything without showing as well. One of my downfalls I am working on.
