They can get Giardia from drinking ground water, I don't know about deer poop.
IF they get it (not gauranteed) Giardia is easily remedied with 3 days of double dose fenbendazol.
I always felt like it was a natural thing, It seemed like they would get fiber and veggies from it, since they cant digest it themselves, But I havent studying it scientificly..(My dogs eat rabbit and sheep droppings, I even used those babies as treats while training-though it does sound crude; hey they are the right size!)
you are lucky. mine roll in it.
I would rather have a dog eat poop them roll all in it, getting it up in the fur, all over the collar(especially if they are wearing prongs). Maya got a decomposing dead rat stuck in her prong collar once........
would it be overkill to "poop proof" them similar to snakeproofing?

I read that dogs can get giardia from deer poo. Is that true? If so, I definitely don't want him eating it.
I am trying to find the info....I am not sure it is Giardia, but I remember something the dogs can get from deer poop......once I find it I will post it...
I instill a leave it command early on with all of my dogs. They do not get to eat much of anything unless I KNOW what it is...I know, I am a strict Mom, but I do not want any vet bills that could have been avoided by two little words.

Yep, I agree Carol.
A note to all I did say, 'a dog left to their own devices'.
For my dog: she likes it, when she can sneak some in. She doesn't get much.
For the op, you've raked up what you could find and pick up as a normal course. I wouldn't though get all wound about the dog finding a piece here or there.
Unless you're willing to monitor, like Carol, myself and many members here, every 'free' moment your dog has, then don't worry about it.
Oh, my dog still gets into some reguardless. Big deal.
Yes, the dog should definitly be taught the "leave it....no matter what" comand. I do use it. I dont let my dogs eat droppings from other peoples (farm) animals, either.
