Saw this article in our local news online. Quite thought provoking... I find it especially interesting that they lump pit bulls and wolf hybrids into the same category.
as a pit bull owner i cant agree more. Being an ER vet tech I cant tell you how many times Ive been almost bitten by a chihuahua, matlese or poodle. (sorry for those of you who have them). I also to have a tea cup chihuahua and it is a project for nail trims nevermind strangers approaching them.
2 of the nastiest dogs i ever had to deal with as kennel mgr for a small animal clinic were 1)an Aussie bitch brought to us for PTS (done w/o ever directly handling her) and 2) a beagle bitch who we knew was getting better when she tried to bite me (!!??). but i can tell stories..oh--and the st. bernard-same thing as the beagle.
but i think that the general public, god save us, has NO CLUE as to how their "fluffy" behaves w/others, ascribes (excuses) bad behaavior with a multitude of "s/he's just like a human" nonsense, etc.
i find the people a lot more difficult to handle w/compassion than their pets; and used to love an opportunity (still do) to educate ppl about their animals and how to handle the problems they encounter--as long as the PEOPLE LISTEN. JMO
As a retired firefighter/medic, I have had to treat more "family pet" type dog bites and usually because someone was really stupid, teasing the dog, leaving dog and strange child unattended, allowing a dog to bite as a puppy because "it was so cute" and then wondering why it bites as a big grown up dog. It breaks my heart how many dogs we get in for obediance classes where the handler/owner is the problem and not the dog.

I want to know the details of their study. Ridiculous. They will use this idiotic statistic to try to make spay/neuter laws, too.
How horrible is this ordinance- it just enforces the negative stereotype of pit bulls. You could have a perfect Pit, with a CGC, family dog and great with kids, and it has to walk around with a muzzle on?? Imagine how people would look at you walking down the street with your dog in a muzzle, it looks intimidating. Not to mention, muzzles if not properly fitted can easily come off or be pawed off by the dog. I wouldn't do it, I would tell them to kiss my ass and write me all the tickets they want to.
I think muzzling dogs should be strictly determined in court, such as if a dog has attacked and is determined to be a "dangerous dog", it's a punishment. Dog owners shouldn't be punished for owning a Pit Bull!

If Cocker Spaniels were not so cute, they would probably be banned, too. lol
