I think he got sick because he ate something foreign outside - maybe grass or poo or something. He has been ok since last night but I'm still keeping an eye on him.
I think I do need to try to move the crate to a better location instead of the middle of the house. This could reduce my trauma. Also, I love the other ideas. I'm a big user of nature's miracle and febreeze. I have used vinegar too with good results but not on such a large scale. The baking soda/cat litter ideas are excellent too.
This is kind of hard for me because I'm 35 and not a mother so I've never had to clean a lot of sick-up or poo.
Oh, and let me also state that if you have a Lampe Berger, they do a fantastic job of getting rid of the odor throughout the house!
If I have a pup/dog that is not feeling well, and they have to be crated vs being able to be outside, I put them in an oversized crate with a bunch of pine shavings in the bottom. This way if they do get sick or have a blow out, it's in the shavings. Helps keep the dog clean and definitely makes cleanup easier when I get home.
Clean up is done with vinegar/water and a mop or scrub brush. If the crate is inside I would also put down an old blanket or cheap 3x4 area rug from HomeDepot under the crate, so any "overflow" is onto something I can either wash or just throw away.
If the dog still gets dirty, before taking them out of the crate I would put an old blanket down, have them walk out onto the blanket, wrap them up in it and carry them outside, so they don't track it through the house.
